You can try Catskiing as a day trip, and if cost is a factor they have a very affordable rate of $299/per person/a Day for their opening week in Dec. You need to call the office for the details and availability. But if your looking to test going out and getting some fresh powder this just might be worth calling them about.
The terrain is fun and they provide all the safety equipment and provide a mountain orientation prior to getting on the slopes for the day. Its a very easy pace and perfect for a advanced skier to get into the backcountry safely.
